We moved into our home about 3 1/2 months ago.
We bought the house foreclosed and since we live in the friggin' frozen tundra the foreclosure people decided that they would fill every pipe, every toilet, every sink and bathtub with antifreeze!
YEP...DARK RED RV STYLE ANTIFREEZE.
AWESOME RIGHT?
Well when we bought the house we had our water inspection which passed with flying colors and the relator simply said, "Just run the water for a while and the antifreeze will wash away."
I had my doubt but since the realtor, water inspection guy and my hubby said that it would be fine I did what they said and eventually the water ran clear.
Well come with me a few weeks later. Life has been crazy since we moved in...working full-time, school, Reagan, holidays, winter, unpacking and everything in between.
I started noticing that I would clean the toilets and that next Saturday it looked like I hadn't cleaned them in 3 weeks! Every time I ran the water or showered or even filled up a little bath for Reagan the water looked clear...and to be honest with you the last thing that was on my mind was whether or not our water was clear...I mean when you have lived with clear, clean water your whole life you don't think to check and see if it's REALLY clear.
A few weeks later I had tried to take bath for the first time in our nice jacuzzi tub. Once the water was filled I notice a fine line of orange film on the edge of the tub where the water rested...if you can imagine I freaked...and I was just a little T.O.!!
Jeff reassured me that it was just because we haven't used the bath yet since running the water and the jets probably had some antifreeze in them...umm excuse me! Awesome I almost took a bath in antifreeze goodness.
Jeff told me to run the water with the jets, drain the water and repeat. With a little bleach the bath water SHOULD be fine.
WELL he was wrong!
Now come with 3 weeks ago...I was rolling up my sleeves and getting ready to do some pretty heavy duty cleaning...spring cleaning if you must and I started running the water in the tubs and showers. I left to do some cleaning in our guest bathroom and came back to a frightening sight.
There was orange gunk ALL over the bottom of the tubs...showers...you name it.
I was livid!
Thoughts started rushing through my head...
Why the helena montana do we still have antifreeze in our pipes?
Have I really been bathing my child in this?
Have we ALL been drinking this?
Why aren't we sick?
Why aren't we DEAD for the love?
I rushed out to Jeff to show him what I had discovered about our water.
THERE WAS STILL ANTIFREEZE IN OUR WATER!
Jeff did some research and found that they used edible antifreeze so it was 'safe' and 'ok' that we were possibly drinking or showering with some of it left...awesome!
Jeff explained to me that it was probably just caked onto the pipes and when we ran the water a long time it would come off the pipes. He then said the toilet water was gross probably because the back of the toilet with all the gadgets {those are my terms I don't know what it's called} had antifreeze in it.
Sure enough we lifted the lid and there it was...like a horror movie I could hear the
music playing in the background as we looked into the toilet tank thing...it was totally caked ALL over the inside of that tank! RED antifreeze!
How could we be so stupid! I am such a clean freak and I don't know how this got past me.
I was annoyed and frustrated at myself.
Jeff rushed to the store and got gallons of bleach...he said that he would flush our water pipes with bleach and we would run the water in all the faucets and that would get all the antifreeze from the pipes.
So we cleaned, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned.
I was really annoyed to be honest that we had to use bleach. Especially in our water. I know that living in the city they put bleach in the water but we have our own well and it makes me nervous.
I don't want to bath Reagan or have her drink bleach water.
I was a little more concerned because I never use bleach while cleaning. In fact I grew up using and still use all natural cleaning products.
It's nice to know that I'm cleaning and sanitizing my home with cleaning products that are free of harsh chemicals.
I know that I can feel safe when Reagan chews on toys or sits on the ground.
But I knew to clean our pipes that what we needed to use and if we let the water run long enough it would flush the antifreeze and the bleach out.
So I was feeling good that the nightmare was over by the end of the day.
The water was flushed and the pipes were clean...at least I thought.
Yesterday I went to give Reagan a bath and while I was getting ready to fill the bathtub with water I noticed there was some film on the shower...
great...it wasn't over.
Although we had seen clear, clean water it was back again.
But I WAS OVER IT.
I wasn't OK with my baby drinking and bathing in antifreeze.
So I ran to the store {I know it was Sunday but this was an emergency}
I grabbed more bleach and a few gallons of water.
We filled the pipes with bleach ran the water until we could smell the bleach and turned off all faucets.
We let the bleach sit in the pipes overnight and I was suppose to let the water run for at least an hour around 12.
So I did...and as our home filled with the smell of bleach I was feeling optimistic.
Then after 30 minutes of water running I went to check the water.
Don't worry there was CRAP on the bottom of the tubs and showers.
OF COURSE.
I called Jeff yet again concerned.
He eased my nerves when he said it was good that we saw stuff...it means that the bleach is working...it's cleaning out our pipes.
He also said we would probably have to do the bleach-pipe thing a few times before we get all the antifreeze out.
FOR THE LOVE.
Thank you relator for informing us that this would be an issue!
So let us look at some pictures and senses from today's events...shall we?
