I had completely forgotten how much work went into this bedroom! Look at that before picture!! #amazeballs
This room is so hard to photograph because it’s in the basement AND it’s a long rectangle shape, so why not start the post of with a disclaimer?! I don’t think I really needed to say anything though, our professional grade “before” pictures pretty much speak for themselves.
OH, this was also before we upgraded our camera! #winkface
Originally, this room was suppose to be a family room, I think. Although it has a closet and a bathroom right off of it, we using it as a family room. The other two kids sleep downstairs and because this house is on the smaller side, we needed to get a bit fancy with our nursery situation! What better room to place a master bedroom/nursery than a long rectangle living room? The bathroom that it’s connected to needs its own blog post just to show you how awesome it is…cough cough (no sarcasm in my voice at all) BUT more on the bathroom later, let’s talk more about this room!
Let’s first talk about the RENOVATING crap!
You can’t see it very well but the lighting was old school, like had been there probably since the 50’s. Jeff removed the lights and noticed the electrical was knob and tube wiring aka really old. So, in order to place recessed lighting, he had to connect to the existing knob and tube wiring and run new wires to the new light fixtures.
If you look closely in the photo below, on the left side of the bed, on the wall, you can see the patchwork for the old access doors to the house waterline. When Jeff removed those old pieces of trim, he noticed some water damage so he ended up taking a large chunk of drywall out of the wall and patching that.
He also removed the old trim from the bookshelf, sanded it all down, and replaced it with new trim, before staining it black.
After installing recessed lights, Jeff patched the ceiling and textured it himself with a sponge. (I was super impressed with how perfect it blended with the rest of the ceiling)
We then revamped the bedroom with a lighter color of paint.
Behr Ultra paint (satin) from The Home Depot in the shade of “HALATION”
I hand painted and cut the edges of the back of the bookshelf with white paint…it took like 3 hours. #itwasharderthanitlooks I figured I would put that detail in this post because it took so long and I am proud of it! HAHA
Once the painting was done, it felt like a brand new room. I mean, of course we would love to rip out the carpet and dig the windows out more, but we were on a pretty tight budget.
It’s amazing how a room can transform with just a can of paint and some new lighting!
NOW came MY FAVORITE PART, the DECORATING!
I knew I wanted to keep it simple, light, modern, and fresh.
Neutral colors were a must.
There was no room for a changing table or dresser, so I made the bookshelf into the dresser with those wire baskets from Target!
Blending a master bedroom and nursery together can be difficult, but I focused on fitting in the important furniture pieces first and then added design elements to tie everything together.
